I love the 'Unlocking Us' episode from March 19, 2020: "Brené on FFT". In this episode, Brené Brown talks about how tough first time experiences can be. Being new at things makes us feel vulnerable as parents. Brené's FFT strategy can help us push through the adventures of parenthood. What is a Comox Valley trail that you would recommend? Strathcona Parks' Paradise Meadows allows easy access to the alpine. In the summer, you can hike along the boardwalks and once the snow falls, it is a majestic winter wonderland. Describe a project that you were passionate about. Placing babies skin-to-skin immediately after birth is a powerful and natural way to ease their transition into the world. It also promotes breastfeeding and the attachment between the mothers and babies. In 2010, we felt passionate about putting this practice into place for babies born after cesarean sections. We dug into the barriers and collaborated to make this change within our hospital. I am thrilled that we continue to prioritize skin-to-skin care for babies born by cesarean section. What is one thing that you are grateful for when you provide maternity care. I cherish the relationships that have developed over years of team work with other providers such as nurses, physicians and social workers. We rely on these relationships to wrap around families and tailor our care to meet their specific needs. Describe a snapshot of an ordinary moment at work that brings you joy. I am always filled with joy when we are able to hear the baby's heart beat for the first time! I love the expression that appears on the faces of the parents. What turn of phrase do you use to encourage women while they are pushing? I often find myself cheering women on by saying "Give it all you got!". |
"What could be such an anxiety-ridden experience in the anticipation of the greatest gift that is our new baby, Dr. Watters made so special with her exceptionally kind and nurturing nature."
